Grace Austin, a very successful student at Oberlin College, was tragically strangled by her boyfriend while attending Oberlin.

This is so incredibly sad. Grace's name couldn't have fit a person better - she was just so sweet, beautiful and gracious. I am actually tearing up at this realization and hope her family knows that even though this must have happened a long time ago - she is still missed by people they never knew.

Grace was and still remains a real lady. I agree that her name captures her exactly. I used to ride my bike through the woods to visit her. That is until Wayne Jackson chased me away! She was a very long term friend and I still think fondly of her. I'm thinking that she was the first african american homecoming queen at Fort Hunt. We have an awesome class!

I could not agree with everyone, that it is so incredibly sad for someone so young, to have her life taken away unexpectedly.

I'm so sorry for the pain of those who are family and friends who will not be able to have here in the physical world.  Grace's name is fitting to her personality, and spirit.  I remembered here always being so nice, sweet, and soft spoken.  I always thought she was an angel, brought down to show her love and compassion for life.

She was well liked in school.  I'm glad she won the Homecoming Queen, she reminds me of the Lady Di persona.  Very giving, and helpful to everyone.
I know that she will never be forgotten.  She will always be there in our hearts.

My condolences to the family and her close friends.

Grace, Daphne Beer and I worked together on the Frontline newspaper and had internships together at the Alexandria Gazette our senior year.  Always kind, always effervescent and such a promising life ahead of her, her loss is so tragic.  We will miss her!

Grace was such a sweetheart - we worked together in Student Government our senior year, but I had known her for many years in school.  One thing we used to joke about though in the Student Govt office was her name, because she was actually very kludzy!  I tried to go to her funeral, but got so lost driving in DC to go pick up Mary Anne Dooley at Trinity Univ that we never made it!  I remember crying so hard in the car.  But my mom made it and went back to the Austin's house and talked with her folks for a long time.  I still think about her from time to time, especially when I go to visit my parents' gravesites in Arlington National Cemetery because that is where Grace is buried.
